tl;dr: Geoff Graham has acquired CSS-Tricks from DigitalOcean, making the site independent again after its 2022 sale by founder Chris Coyier. Graham plans to fund it through a mix of advertising, memberships, a shop, and an upcoming beginner HTML/CSS course, while reviving the newsletter and guest-writing submissions. Publishing will continue at a reduced pace (one or two articles weekly), with a focus on making the site more inclusive for beginners and giving writers a platform rather than using it as a personal soapbox.
HN Discussion: ↑Celebrates the acquisition and expresses excitement for CSS-Tricks' revival under independent ownership ↓Skeptical about long-term viability given LLMs disrupting frontend education and tutorial sites ~Pessimistic about community-focused tech publishing as a sustainable business model generally ~Shares practical experience that ads and courses don't monetize well; services work better ↑Criticizes DigitalOcean's neglectful stewardship, validating the need for the ownership change
